On the night of February 17, 1864, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley sank the Union sloop USS Housatonic near Charleston Harbor. Tragically, Hunley never made it back to port, sinking in Charleston Harbor and killing all nine crewmen. The fate of Hunley remained a mystery for more than a century until the wreck was found in May 1995. In the summer of 2000, the submarine was raised and transported to the Warren G. Lasch Conservation Center for archaeological research and restoration. During the week, the center is an active laboratory for preserving Hunley, but on weekends, visitors can tour the facility and learn about the fascinating discoveries the wreckage has yielded.
